Perming is the process of treating hair with special chemicals to modify the structure of hair to permanently wave or curl. For perming, you need to be at a saloon and your hair will be soaked with a chemical liquid until gets saturated. After saturation, the hair will get wrapped around rods and rollers to produce a curl pattern. The chemicals work with Keratin in your hair. Keratin is the main protein found naturally in hair and it has a vital role in hair structure formation. The bond between keratin molecules and chemicals helps the hair to achieve a new shape. Ammonium thioglycolate is the most commonly used chemical in perm. Perm that contains glyceryl mono thioglycolate is best for those with thin and fragile hair.
Acrylates copolymer, Ammonium hydroxide, Ammonium thioglycolate, Amodimethicone, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Color additives, Polyquaternium-11, Fragrance, Water, Styrene/acrylates copolymer, etc. are the most common ingredients found in perm. Most salons will use premium quality perms containing tested ingredients for eliminating side effects such as scalp irritation and eye irritation.
How Does Perms Work?
Perm is the process of making waves or curls to your hair through a two-stage chemical process. The chemicals in the perm react with hair protein and form a curly shape. Frequent perming is not advised as it might damage your hair over time. If you are not taking care of scalp health, it will lead to hair loss. Maintaining good scalp health is important because once the follicle of your hair gets damaged, new hair growth will not happen from that follicle.
You must do perming in a trusted and professional saloon only. The stylist who performs perming should be aware of perming and chemicals in detail. If the perming is not done properly, it will result in skin irritation, oral toxicity, hair breakage, etc. The longevity of perming is around 6 months, depending on the hair care regime you follow. Scalp health, hair treatment and overall hair growth are the main factors that affect the lifespan of the perm. Perm will last longer for those with long hair when compared to those with short hair.
Different Types of Perms:
There are three types of perms to choose from, cold wave perm, acid-balanced perm and exothermic perm. Also known as alkaline perm, cold wave perm uses ammonium thioglycolate for quicker results in around 15 minutes. Acid-balanced perm needs heat to process and will take more time. Exothermic perm is the easiest one that offers self-timing and self-healing.
